PAEMST are the nation's highest honors for teachers of mathematics and science (including computer science). Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education. Since 1983, more than 4,300 teachers have been recognized for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession. Speaker Proposals: We invite proposals for 75-minute sessions at all levels, from Pre-Kindergarten to Post-Secondary. There are 5 computer labs available, so sessions that engage participants in computer-based activities are encouraged.

Tidewater Team for Mathematics Education’s 19th Annual Mathematics Day – Tuesday, December 1, 2015

The theme is Effective Mathematics Instruction for ALL Students. Dr. Anderson Norton from VT is our keynote speaker. He will explore how students learn fractions, followed by a hands-on workshop. The last session of the day will follow the format of an Education Camp with participants sharing ideas and materials on topics they have chosen. The cost is $80 per participant paying with cash, check, or purchase order, and $85 per participant paying with credit card. Proposed Licensure Regulations for School Personnel Review – Public Comment Period

These regulations determine the licensure requirements for teachers. Changes have been proposed, and are now available for public comment. The public comment period is open through November 6, 2015. A public hearing will be October 22, 2015 at the VDOE in Richmond.

SPRING CALCULUS CONFERENCE:

Wednesday May 27 from 9 AM to 2:30 PM M at the Math Science Innovation Center in Richmond

The widely respected AP instructor and dynamic speaker, Dixie Ross, will present the workshop. The cost of this one day “conference” is only $25 for teachers outside of the MSIC consortium, and free to those whose districts belong to the consortium. Those teaching precalculus and calculus will be especially interested, but this is open to all who are part of a vertical team working to boost calculus enrollment and success.

MAA MATH FEST: AUGUST 5-8, 2015

MAA MathFest is the annual summer meeting of the Mathematical Association of America. MathFest days will be filled with great mathematics; the evenings with mathematical culture.

VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ANNOUNCES REVIEW OF MATHEMATICS STANDARDS OF LEARNING AND CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK

            An important part of the review process for the Mathematics Standards of Learning and Mathematics Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework is the solicitation of comments from teachers, administrators, curriculum supervisors, mathematics educators, mathematics education organizations, and other members of the public. Comments should focus on recommended additions, deletions, or the movement of content within the current standards and curriculum framework. Public comment will be received from March 27, 2015 to April 27, 2015 at mathematics@doe.virginia.gov.
            The VDOE is also seeking individuals who are qualified and available to serve on a committee to review both the Mathematics Standards of Learning and Mathematics Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework June 22-26, 2015 in Richmond. A Steering Committee, selected from the full review committee, will convene on June 1-3, 2015 in Richmond. Applicants must be teachers, principals, administrators, content specialists, or others who have expertise with the content areas and the standards.
            Individuals who wish to serve on a committee to review the Mathematics Standards of Learning and Mathematics Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework must submit an application through the Web-based process, Instruction Committee Application Processing System (ICAPS). The application will require a professional reference and division approval. Completed applications are due to the VDOE through ICAPS by April 27, 2015. Committee members selected on the basis of expertise, experience, and regional representation will be notified by May 6, 2015.

MATH AWARENESS MONTH: APRIL

This year's theme is "Math Drives Careers." To increase awareness of the non-academic jobs available to those who study the mathematical sciences, MAM 2015 profiles people with degrees in the mathematical sciences who have found successful and rewarding work outside of academia.

SHARE FAIR D.C.: APRIL 11

Share Fair is a FREE, exclusive educational event hosted by The George Washington University. There are two parts: Part One offers professional development for preK-12 teachers in the STEM-related areas. Part Two is called STEMosphere and is open to kids of all ages, families, and communities. STEMosphere is an expo-style event where kids and families can travel from booth to booth experimenting, exploring, and inventing in the STEM areas.

Save the Date for the VCTM Academy and Learn to Make Math Meaningful

Next year, we will sponsor an Academy rather than the Spring Conference. The Academy will be held March 6 – 7, 2015 and the location is Virginia Beach. The format of an academy differs from a conference in that it is focused around a theme and participants are part of a grade-band group for the entire day and a half. The grade bands are K-2, 3-5, 6-8, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and above. This year the theme is Making Math Meaningful: Inquiry Learning through the Process Goals. An Academy is also smaller than a conference and space is limited. So, watch for more information and be ready to join us in Virginia Beach.

We recently collected survey data to check the pulse of our membership. One of the common themes was to continue working to make the website more user-friendly and easier to navigate. 2014 Annual Conference

We just want to send one last thank you to everyone who made our Spring Conference a success. At our last Board meeting, we received a final report. We had 962 attendees and 150 sessions. A very special thanks is extended to LouAnn Lovin, Kyle Schultz and VVCTM.

NASA STEM Teacher Professional Development Program.

Professional development can include a visit to NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA and service as an ambassador of NASA content at Busch Gardens during NASA Days on Saturday, August 2nd and Sunday, August 3rd, 2014. Summer Opportunity for our Students

CHROME STEM Summer Camp for Teens is open to rising 10^th to 12^th graders with at least a 2.75 GPA who want to pursue careers in STEM. The camp is July 7 – 11 at Norfolk State University. It is free to participants. Encourage interested students to go to www.chrome.org for more information and to apply. Applications are due May 15, 2014.

March is shaping up to be a very busy month! Please read below for some important updates.

VCTM Proposed Constitutional Changes

· The VCTM Executive Board has been undergoing a periodic review of our Constitution in an effort to make it better reflect the changing role and activities of the organization. We are recommending several changes to the current Constitution. Among the major changes are the addition, removal, or combination of several committees and the addition of the office of historian. Please take a minute to review the proposed changes at www.vctm.org.

· The approval of the constitution must be done by the membership. You’ll have an opportunity to vote on the proposed changes at the conference, or, if you cannot attend, a ballot will be mailed by the end of the month. The Constitution can only be amended by two-thirds of the votes cast.

· Thanks for your help in making VCTM a vital and active organization.

Annual Conference

· The annual conference is just around the corner! Pre-registration has closed, but on-site registration will be available Thursday, March 13, from 4 – 8 or on Friday, March 14, after 7 a.m.

· If you are planning on attending, here’s some important information:

o Registration is available in the HHS building on JMU’s campus.

o Parking on campus limited. VCTM conference attendees may park in the C10 and C12 lots on JMU’s east campus between the hours of 7:30 AM and 8:00 PM on March 13-15th, 2014. Parking in other lots may result in campus guests receiving parking citations. An online campus map can be accessed at http://web.jmu.edu/parking/parkingmap.pdf

o Sessions are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday March 14th and on Saturday March 15^th from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

o Commercial Exhibits will be open in the Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. As you walk around the 1^st floor of the conference, please take a moment to thank the exhibitors, without whom our conference would not be possible. Everyone who collects the signatures of six exhibitors on the card provided at registration will be entered into a drawing for numerous door prizes! The drawing will take place Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. Be sure to check the VCTM table to see if you are a winner!

o Local volunteers will be dressed in royal blue t-shirts with our conference logo. If you have any questions, please look for one of these volunteers. They will be happy to help!

· A very special thanks to LouAnn Lovin, Kyle Schultz, and the Valley of Virginia Council for Teachers of Mathematics for their help in coordinating what is sure to be a fantastic event.

· The contest gives students throughout Virginia a chance to show their problem solving ability in "beautiful ways."

Other Opportunities for Students

· BLAST (Building Leaders for Advancing Science and Technology) is a partnership between the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia and the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is a three-day, on-campus, summer STEM experience for current 8th and 9th graders from Virginia middle and high school. It is a free program that will bring STEM alive to the participants through a series of innovative experiences. Applications are due February 1. · Einstein fellow Jim Town has created a project-based online class designed for high school students and teachers. The free eight week course opens on January 13. Go to mathtown - coursesites to enroll.

Registration is now open for our 2014 conference!

The 2014 conference will be held at James Madison University on March 14 and 15.

2014 Math Beauty Contest is now open for students!

The contest gives students throughout Virginia a chance to show their problem solving ability in “beautiful ways.”
Entries must be postmarked by January 15^th.

Annual Programs that Work Awards – Time Sensitive Information!

The Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition invites you to nominate effective student and teacher educational programs for the VMSC "Programs that Work" Awards.
The Coalition is interested in recognizing exemplary mathematics, science, and integrated STEM programs that have a positive impact on student or teacher learning.

Fantastic opportunity for High School Students!

The Joint Science Education Project (JSEP) announces a call for applications from U.S. high school students interested in participating in field research in Greenland!
Five high school students from the United States will join peers from Denmark and Greenland to spend three weeks during summer 2014 doing field science in and around Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, and visiting Summit Station, a research base on the Greenland ice sheet. Students and teachers will work alongside scientists on research projects in a wide variety of fields including biology, geology, climatology, chemistry, and engineering.
Students chosen for the U.S. team must be in 10th or 11th grade at the time of application, and they must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Applications are due by January 31, 2014. To apply or find additional information, go to http://www.arcus.org/jsep.

Michael Bolling of VDOE shares SOL testing information at the September VCTM Board Meeting

Additional practice items for the Algebra and higher level SOL math courses will be available next month (20 for each course).
Practice items for grades 3-8 are forthcoming.
Data analysis at the state level shows that the students did well with the technology enhanced items, the increased complexity of the problems was where they struggled.
A request for school divisions to participate in an ARDT field test has been announced.

NCLB Waiver Approved by US Department of Education Flexibility Plan Does Away with Complex & Unrealistic "AYP" Objectives
