- What is the connection between high quality mathematics instruction and student performance?
- How can school-based mathematics leaders or Mathematics Specialists improve instruction and student learning?
You are invited to attend a 3-day institute for Elementary and Middle School Principals that will provide some answers to these questions. This professional networking opportunity is made possible through the support of the National Science Foundation (DUE 092653), the Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition and the Virginia Department of Education.

Agenda:
Day 1 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Explore the mathematics your students should be doing in order to understand the more rigorous SOL.
Day 2 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Part 1: Use the SOL process goals (communication, reasoning and proof, representation, connections, and problem solving) as benchmarks for observing mathematics instruction.
Part 2: Build mathematics leaders/specialists/coaches
Day 3 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Develop a new vision for the mathematics program in your school based on what the students, teachers and leaders should be doing to promote good mathematics instruction.
REGISTRATION DETAILS:
- Registration will begin May 8, 2013 and close May 22, 2013.
- Space is limited to 35 participants for each location.
- Registration does not guarantee confirmation.
- Confirmation and more details will be sent by June 1, 2013.
- There will be a wait list maintained in case of cancellations.
- Depending on the number of registrations school districts may be limited in the number. of participants according to the size of the district.
- Lunch will be provided each day. Lodging is the responsibility of the participants.
