The Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics welcomes you to attend a SOL Institute in Region VIII. Trainers from the VDOE SOL FALL 2019 Institutes “Developing Deeper Learning Through Rich Mathematical Tasks” for the grade bands 3-5 and 6-8 will be in Region VIII at the Workforce Development Center in Keysville, VA to provide the same professional development sessions from October.

Note: These sessions contain the same material that is covered in the VDOE SOL Institutes. Anyone who was not able to attend a VDOE Institute is encouraged to sign up for these sessions.

Lunch and snacks are included in your registration and the training is free of charge.

The purpose of the 2019 Developing Deeper Learning through Rich Mathematical Tasks – Mathematics Institute is to provide teachers and mathematics leaders with professional development focused on effective mathematics instruction. Particular emphasis will be on the implementation of rich mathematical tasks to support deeper learning opportunities for students and to strengthen locally-designed curricula.

Specific goals of the Institute will include:

  • strengthening the teaching and learning of mathematics through the use of rich tasks;
  • supporting equitable learning opportunities and promoting positive mathematical identities and agency; and
  • providing training materials for divisions and teachers for use as a local professional development tool.

The Institute is offered for teachers, division-level leaders, mathematics supervisors, instructional supervisors, professional development personnel, division lead mathematics teachers, and other administrators with responsibility for mathematics.
