VCTM 2024 Conference - Thanks for Attending

Bridges Richmond 2024

We are excited to share that the Bridges Organization will be holding their 2024 Bridges Conference at Virginia Commonwealth University on August 1 - 5, 2024. Past conferences have been held in places like Finland, Canada, and Sweden, so it is a huge honor to have this conference come to Virginia. The goal of the Bridges Organization is to foster research, practice, and new interest in mathematical connections to art, music, architecture, and culture. VCTM's Position on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Mathematics Education

The VCTM board adopted an official position on diversity, equity, and inclusion in mathematics education. Please read the position to learn more about the official actions to which we are committing in order to improve classroom practices that support equity-based mathematics teaching.

Mission Statement: The Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics is the public voice of mathematics education in Virginia, supporting teachers to ensure equitable mathematics learning at the highest quality for all students through leadership, professional development, and research.

Vision Statement: The Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics is the state’s leading community of educators, by educators, for the benefit of all K-16 mathematics educators. VCTM members are connected, valued, and supported to ensure all Virginia students have access to the highest quality mathematics teaching and learning. We envision Virginia students who are inspired by the usefulness and beauty of mathematics, empowered by the opportunities mathematics affords, and prepared as confident doers of mathematics in the changing Digital Era.

Ongoing Grants, Scholarships, and awards

Grant and Scholarship Opportunities for Mathematics Educators

VCTM provides several grants for Virginia's mathematics educators. Select Grants and Scholarships from the menu to learn more. Most of these are only available to current VCTM members--one more reason to join us today!

Karen Dee Michalowicz 1st Timers Grant: These grants are designed to support attendance at an upcoming NCTM or VCTM conference. 

Professional Development Grant: These $1,000 grants will support attendance at conferences or workshops, tuition, reimbursement for mathematics education courses, or other professional development opportunities. Applications are accepted on a continual basis.

Ena Gross Professional Development Scholarship: this scholarship will provide funding towards tuition reimbursement for teachers seeking to add an endorsement to teach middle or high school mathematics or for career switchers seeking to become endorsed to teach mathematics. 

Scholarship for Preservice Teachers

The Edward A. Anderson Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students studying to becoming a mathematics teacher. 

William C. Lowry Mathematics Educators of the Year

Each year, VCTM awards the Educator of the Year to a teacher at each of the following levels: elementary, middle, high, math specialist, university.

Mathematics Beauty Contest for Students

VCTM is proud to sponsor the mathematics beauty contest for teachers. Each spring, we pose problems for a variety of grade bands that promote problem solving.
